The year is 2021 and you are sitting there with old, outdated gear for your stoma. How can you even bear to sit in a room with yourself? I’m just kidding; it’s okay. Just know that you could be doing better. In fact, there has never been a better time to find the most effective and fairly priced ostomy gear that the world has to offer. What do I mean by that? I’m talking about the internet! That’s right, almost anything you’ll ever need to purchase for the rest of your life can now be found with a few clicks on a phone, tablet, or computer. The internet is rampant with medical supplies from different wholesalers and retailers that exist all over the world. You’re telling me, with all the resources you have available, you’re not going to ensure you have the best gear for your stoma.
For me personally, it took me quite a while to find the best supplies for my stoma. After my ostomy, I wanted to make sure I was buying quality supplies that would last me a good amount of time and would not further complicate anything related to my procedure. I began surfing the web for what other people have to say about ostomy supplies. Little did I know that there are actually an insane amount of resources available for reviews, answered questions, and how-tos related to ostomies. My first suggestion to you is to read a lot of different reviews over any of the gear you’re looking to buy. The thing about the internet is that it’s very easy to lie or to pretend to be someone else. Take me for example; I could just be any random guy talking about something that I have no real knowledge about, but lucky for you I consider myself an expert when it comes to taking care of my stoma.
When you’re reading reviews, make sure to source from a wide range of reviews and people. Like I said, people lie on the internet. That means that you are going to have to filter through a lot of reviews to make sure that you are getting to the bottom of whatever you are looking at. Furthermore, it’s important to note that companies will sometimes pay people to leave good reviews or will create advertisements that look like reviews. This dirty trick is something that you don’t want to be falling for. Make sure the review you are reading is written by a real person and not some dumb old robot. Personally, I can’t stand the marketing world. It feels like companies are truly out to get you. You’d think ostomy related gear would be safe from the manipulative tactics of greedy marketers, but you would be wrong my friend.
Another tip I have for you is to be patient with yourself and the gear you are buying. It takes time to figure out how to live life with your stoma and ostomy bag, so don’t feel pressured to get everything perfectly figured out right away; it may take some time to figure out how to adapt to your stoma, and that’s okay. Just remember to do some proper research when you’re looking for your next shipment of ostomy gear and you will be okay.
